Palm trees lean over white-sand beaches. Boats replace cars. Accommodations can be simple. Electricity and amenities can be limited.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou're entering \u003cstrong\u003eGuna Yala\u003c\/strong\u003e, an autonomous Indigenous territory home to the Guna people.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis isn't simply another collection of pretty Caribbean islands.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eIt's someone's home, culture and community.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eApproach it that way.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e⛵ MY FAVORITE WAY TO EXPERIENCE IT? BY BOAT.\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy San Blas experience wasn't a traditional resort vacation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI spent several days \u003cstrong\u003esailing the islands on a catamaran with friends we'd originally met while traveling in Costa Rica.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat gave us the freedom to wake up surrounded by water, move between islands, snorkel, explore, fish and experience the archipelago at a completely different pace.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne of my favorite memories?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHeading out by dinghy, spearfishing for triggerfish and later eating what we'd caught as the sun went down.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt wasn't polished.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eIt was unforgettable.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e🚙 GETTING THERE IS PART OF THE ADVENTURE\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is one destination where you need to understand the logistics \u003cstrong\u003ebefore you book the pretty island accommodation.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eReaching Guna Yala overland involves traveling from Panama City across the continental divide toward the Caribbean coast before continuing by boat.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe roads, transfers, boats and timing are all part of the experience.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd yes—\u003cstrong\u003ebring your passport.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is not the kind of destination where I'd recommend simply showing up and figuring everything out when you arrive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Blueprint helps you understand \u003cstrong\u003ehow the pieces connect before you go.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003e🌴 DON'T EXPECT LUXURY. Ask before photographing people. Respect local rules.
