Behind those postcard-perfect villages are steep staircases, tiny roads, packed buses, ferry schedules, hidden beaches, restaurants tucked far above the waterfront and little towns that many visitors rush right past.
And that’s exactly why I created The Amalfi Coast Blueprint.
This visual travel guide goes beyond the standard “Positano, Amalfi, Ravello” itinerary to help you understand where to stay, how to move around the coast, which experiences are worth the effort, where to escape the crowds and how to experience a more authentic side of one of Italy's most famous destinations.
🍋 POSITANO IS BEAUTIFUL. BUT IT'S NOT THE WHOLE AMALFI COAST.
You should absolutely experience the famous places.
But don't assume the most photographed town automatically needs to become your home base.
One of the biggest themes of this Blueprint is discovering the smaller villages, quieter beaches, local restaurants and overlooked corners hiding between the destinations everyone already knows.
Sometimes going one town farther completely changes the experience.
⛴️ TAKE THE FERRY
Whenever it makes sense, choose the water over the road.
The ferries aren't simply transportation—they're one of the best ways to experience the coastline.
Instead of squeezing onto a bus while it winds around narrow cliffside roads, you can sit outside, look back at the villages cascading down the mountains and actually enjoy getting from one destination to another.
Ravello is the exception—you'll need to travel uphill from the coast to reach it.
And yes, it's worth it.
🪜 PREPARE FOR STAIRS
This is one of those things beautiful rental photos don't always explain.
That incredible apartment perched above the sea may come with a LOT of stairs.
Many accommodations are tucked high into the hillsides, which can mean spectacular views and a much more local experience—but also carrying luggage uphill through steep pedestrian streets.
Before booking, find out exactly how you'll reach your accommodation.
If mobility is a concern, staying closer to the waterfront or main transportation areas can make a major difference. And if you've already fallen in love with that cliffside rental?
Arrange a porter for the luggage.
Your future self will thank you.
🚤 THE COAST WAS MADE TO BE SEEN FROM THE WATER
If your budget allows for one splurge, make it a boat day.
Seeing Positano, Amalfi, Praiano and the tiny coastal communities from the sea gives you an entirely different perspective.
Swim. Find coves. Stop for lunch. Explore places that aren't easily accessible from the road.
The coastline itself becomes the attraction.
🍝 EAT AWAY FROM THE MAIN TOURIST AREAS
One of my favorite travel rules applies especially well here:
Walk away from the view everyone is photographing. Then start looking for dinner.
Some of the most memorable meals can happen at smaller, family-run restaurants tucked into residential streets and hillside communities.
Talk to the owners.
Ask questions.
And if the opportunity comes up to see the kitchen or learn about what they're making—say yes.
Those personal experiences are often what you remember long after you've forgotten the name of another famous viewpoint.
🍋 FOLLOW THE LEMONS
The Amalfi Coast isn't just visually beautiful—it has an identity.
Lemon groves climb the hillsides. Limoncello appears everywhere. Family recipes have been passed down for generations. Fishing villages still exist beneath the tourism.
Make room for experiences involving local food, lemons, cooking, wine and regional traditions rather than treating every day as another sightseeing mission.

The famous towns deserve their reputation.
But the Blueprint also focuses on the places between them.

Slow it down.
Choose a smart home base. Take the ferry. Get on a boat. Wander away from the main square. Eat somewhere without an Instagram line outside. Spend an afternoon doing absolutely nothing beside the Mediterranean.
🇮🇹 WHY THE AMALFI COAST?
Because underneath all the hype is a place that really is extraordinary.
You can wake up overlooking the Mediterranean, walk through a village built into a cliff, eat fresh pasta beneath lemon trees, take a ferry along one of the most dramatic coastlines in Europe, swim beneath the mountains and finish the day watching the lights appear across the hillside.
The trick isn't figuring out whether the Amalfi Coast is beautiful.
It's figuring out how to experience it without letting the crowds define your trip.
