πŸ‡΅πŸ‡¦ The Panama & San Blas Islands Blueprint

City Skylines. Jungle Roads. Tiny Islands. Discover the Panama Most Travelers Never Reach.

Panama is one of those destinations where one trip can feel like three completely different vacations.

You can wake up surrounded by skyscrapers in Panama City, wander the colorful streets of Casco Viejo, escape to an island for the afternoonβ€”and then travel across the country to a completely different world of tiny palm-covered islands, turquoise Caribbean water and communities preserving centuries of Indigenous culture.

For me, Panama is also personal. My parents have spent part of the year living there, giving me the opportunity to experience the country beyond a typical vacation.

But the experience that changed the way I saw Panama was venturing into Guna Yalaβ€”the San Blas Islands.

The Panama & San Blas Islands Blueprint is my visual guide to experiencing both sides of this incredible destination, with the logistics, islands, cultural insight, hidden gems, transportation advice and firsthand experiences that can be difficult to piece together before you go.

πŸ™οΈ START WITH PANAMA CITY

Don't treat Panama City as simply the airport you fly into before heading somewhere else.

Spend some time here.

Explore Casco Viejo, experience the contrast between the historic district and modern skyline, eat, wander and give yourself time to understand Panama before heading toward the islands.

You can even escape the city for an island day on Taboga.

But then...

Go farther.

🏝️ SAN BLAS DOESN'T FEEL LIKE A NORMAL CARIBBEAN VACATION

The San Blas Islands aren't lined with giant resorts, infinity pools and beach clubs.

That's exactly the point.

Tiny islands rise from intensely blue Caribbean water. Palm trees lean over white-sand beaches. Boats replace cars. Accommodations can be simple. Electricity and amenities can be limited.

You're entering Guna Yala, an autonomous Indigenous territory home to the Guna people.

This isn't simply another collection of pretty Caribbean islands.

It's someone's home, culture and community.

Approach it that way.

β›΅ MY FAVORITE WAY TO EXPERIENCE IT? BY BOAT.

My San Blas experience wasn't a traditional resort vacation.

I spent several days sailing the islands on a catamaran with friends we'd originally met while traveling in Costa Rica.

That gave us the freedom to wake up surrounded by water, move between islands, snorkel, explore, fish and experience the archipelago at a completely different pace.

One of my favorite memories?

Heading out by dinghy, spearfishing for triggerfish and later eating what we'd caught as the sun went down.

It wasn't polished.

It was unforgettable.

πŸš™ GETTING THERE IS PART OF THE ADVENTURE

This is one destination where you need to understand the logistics before you book the pretty island accommodation.

Reaching Guna Yala overland involves traveling from Panama City across the continental divide toward the Caribbean coast before continuing by boat.

The roads, transfers, boats and timing are all part of the experience.

And yesβ€”bring your passport.

This is not the kind of destination where I'd recommend simply showing up and figuring everything out when you arrive.

The Blueprint helps you understand how the pieces connect before you go.

🌴 DON'T EXPECT LUXURY. EXPECT SOMETHING BETTER.

If your definition of paradise requires room service, a giant resort pool and perfect Wi-Fi, San Blas may not be your place.

But if paradise means waking up on a tiny island surrounded by Caribbean water with almost nothing between you and the horizon...

Now we're talking.

The beauty here comes from its simplicity.

Go prepared for a more rustic experience and you'll appreciate it much more.

🧭 TRAVEL WITH RESPECT

Visiting Guna Yala isn't only about finding the prettiest island.

You're a guest in an Indigenous territory with its own customs, communities and way of life.

Learn before you arrive. Ask before photographing people. Respect local rules. Support Guna-owned accommodations, guides and businesses whenever possible.

Don't expect the destination to change to accommodate you.

That's part of what makes traveling here so special.

✨ PANAMA GIVES YOU TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TRIPS

That's part of what makes this Blueprint unique.

Spend a few days experiencing Panama City and Casco Viejo, then completely change the pace.

Trade skyscrapers for palm trees.

Trade Uber for a boat.

Trade restaurants for dinner beside the water.

Trade your itinerary for island time.

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡¦ WHY PANAMA & SAN BLAS?

Because some destinations are memorable because they're beautiful.

Others are memorable because they make you feel like you've traveled somewhere genuinely different.

San Blas did both for me.

This is not the Caribbean where you check into a resort and never leave.

This is the Caribbean where getting there is part of the story.

🌊 GO FARTHER THAN PANAMA CITY.

Whether you're trying to understand how to reach San Blas, where to stay, how island-hopping works, whether to experience it by land or sailboat, or how to combine the islands with Panama City, The Panama & San Blas Islands Blueprint gives you a head start.

I've done the digging. You get to do the traveling.
